We reached Jewel Chapter Status for 2010!

Collegiate chapters gain membership in the Jewel Society when they raise $2,000 or more for the Alpha Gamma Delta Foundation annually (June 1-May 31). When this program began in 1994, 13 chapters were members of the Jewel Society. In the past decade, our collegiate chapters have made a strong commitment to service and philanthropic projects that  benefit the Alpha Gamma Delta Foundation and their local community.

The Delta Pi Chapter raised more than $2300 through bake sales, car washes and candy sales to donate money to the Alpha Gamma Delta Foundation! We are sp proud and honored to receive this award. Congrats to Danielle, our philanthropy coordinator for making this happen!

The Delta Pi Chapter volunteered to support raising money for local charities on June 2, 2010. Former Oakland Raiders Coach, Pro Football Hall of Famer and Emmy Award Winner John Madden and former San Francisco 49ers  Coach, University of California - Berkeley Coach and current NFL Network broadcaster Steve Mariucci co-hosted the 12th Annual "Battle of the Bay" Charity Bocce Tournament.

This unique event that has brought famous athletes, celebrities, dignitaries and business leaders together in a venue dedicated to the old world game of bocce. Bay Area Professional Sports Teams were represented with players, coaches and high-level executives, as well as representation from the top Bay Area Educational Institutions and their Athletic and Academic departments. Also, Fortune 500 Companies will also be represented by corporate executives as well.

Over the past decade, this event has raised over $3 million dollars for local and national charities. The 2010 beneficiaries are Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, Special Olympics, Easter Seals Bay Area's Kaleidoscope After-School Program and Tri-Valley High School Football. This year's tournament will include up to 700 people in attendance and brings out the competitive spirit for a good cause.

The "Battle of the Bay" tournament has provided excitement for the Northern California region and continues to grow in reputation. Thank you for visiting our page and we hope you can be involved with this year's festivities. Thank you to local Delta Pi Alum Amy Kime for bringing this opportunity to us!

Philanthropy of the Past
Alpha Gamma Delta was the first women's fraternity to establish an international philanthropic project. In 1919, is was decided to create a summer camp for underprivileged children and in 1920 the camp was opened on a lake in Jackson, Michigan. Later, a second camp was established in Wellington, Ontario. The camps were staffed by collegians and alumnae of Alpha Gamma Delta for more than 25 years. In 1947 Alpha Gamma Delta changed its philanthropic focus, but maintained an interest in children. Working with the Natinal Society for Crippled Children and Adults, the Fraternity sponsored a training program for counselors involved with the rehab of the physically impaired.

The Convention of 1964 approved a change of project to provide support for children with minimal brain dysfunction. At the time Alpha Gamma Delta was also sponsoring cleft palate symposia held periodically at Syracuse University and providing aid to alumnae sisters in financial need through the Louise Leonard Fund.

In 1979, at the Diamond Anniversary Convention, the Diabetes Research Foundation was adopted as the official beneficiary of financial support and service. The philanthropic efforts of the Fraternity were directed toward the treatment, research and cure of diabetes mellitus in 1991.
